Two days of Stone Carving Workshops with Dominic Keogh of Momento Mori Stonework
Join us in the medieval surroundings of St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church where traditional Stonemason Dominic Keogh will introduce participants to the techniques used by Medieval stone carvers to create the stunning features we see all around the church and city. Over 6 hours, participants will gain hands-on experience at carving their own replica of one of the “faceless angels” wings from the church, an intricate historical design that will allow participants the chance to gain knowledge in tool skills, dropping a background, V cutting and relief carving. During the day, participants will also be taught about the rich history of working with stone in Ireland, and the many fascinating features of the church itself.
20th August: Angel Wing Stone Carving
Time: 10am-4pm, with break for lunch
Cost: €90; each session limited to 10 participants
What to bring: ● Work boots, trainers will not be allowed on site. ● Safety glasses (preferably not goggles) ● Ear protection, some people find the noise of several carvers a lot to deal with. ● Mask if needed, not essential. ● If participants have their own carving tools, eg,dummy hammer, flat carving chisel they can bring them. ● A soft hand brush or wide paintbrush to wipe away dust. ● A jacket or overshirt, some people get cold standing still carving. ● Water & lunch
Participants are welcome to bring their own carving tools, but all materials including the stone, the bankers, tools and design will be provided
