Join us as we host a series of workshops for the series How to Build a Church, part of National Heritage Week

Two days of Ironworking Workshops with Triscele Forging

20th August: Iron Smelting

Time: 10:30am-6:00pm, with break for lunch

1 day Iron smelting course for up to 8 participants.
Participants will learn how to using an organic iron ore from Galway bogs, to smelt their own iron bloom.
Working as a team participants will learn:
• History of Irish medieval iron production
• How to process clay and build a furnace
• Using medieval techniques reduce the iron ore to metallic iron bloom
• How to “birth” and consolidate the iron bloom
• An introduction to historic steel making

What to bring: water & lunch. Workshops to take place outside in the car park, so wear weather-appropriate clothing.

Cost: €120; each session limited to 8 participants

21th August: Iron Forging

Time: 10:30am-6:00pm, with break for lunch

1 day on site blacksmith/bladesmith school for up to 8 participants at a time.
The extremely popular mobile forge school is fully equipped with 4 mobile coal forges, 4 anvils, and all the tools needed to take a group of 8 people for a full day traditional forging course working in pairs as Smith and Striker, where something like a small Sgian or Frederic’s cross etc could be made, which they then keep themselves to bring home.

What to bring: water & lunch. Workshops to take place outside in the car park, so wear weather-appropriate clothing.
