SUMMARY:St. Nicholas' Singers 'Come & Sing'
DESCRIPTION:The St. Nicholas Singers is an all-comers group of voices. Gatherings are project driven and aimed at singers who relish getting to grips with interesting choral music in a large four-part choir within an intensive preparation period. Projects can take place over a whole weekend or\, as in this event\, an afternoon. It is open to all regardless of age or experience\, and new members are always welcome. This Come and Sing introduces Tomos Watkins to Galway singers and also gives a taste of some of the St. Nicholas Singers events planned for next year. \nA note from our new Director of the Schola Cantorum\, Tomos Watkins: ‘The Road Not Taken’ by the wonderful American poet Robert Frost is an apt text for new beginnings. So I do hope you’ll join me for a Come-and-Sing afternoon on November 15th to sing Randall Thompson’s setting from Frostiana – which we’ll be singing next year in full – as well as some of my other favourite tunes. We will be exploring two other pieces from the Americas: an arrangement of the Shaker tune ‘Circle March’ by Glasgow-based composer Katy Lavinia Cooper\, and ‘Dulce Jesús mío\,’ a simple\, beautiful carol from sixteenth-century South America. If that wasn’t enough\, we have also programmed two movements from Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem: the opening movement and the iconic ‘Libera me.’ To whet your appetite\, you can listen to the music on Spotify here. I look forward to seeing you there! \nTomos Watkins \nDirector of the Schola Cantorum at St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church \nThe suggested donation of €20 includes all tuition\, scores and refreshments.
